I’m still pretty fresh at this volunteer reading thing. As I write this, I am in my second year of reading. Earlier this year I was reading with a student and I asked her if there were any particular types of books she would like to read. She asked me if I had any “open” books. What she meant was “lift-the-flap” books. So I went searching and came across a recommendation for “A is for Apple”. This book has been the biggest hit at school this year and I’m so grateful to Anaya for suggesting it.

Lift-the-flap books are great for young readers because its multisensory. It engages the body as well as the mind which helps them to learn. When a reader opens the flap, it gives them a jolt of excitement. It’s so much fun to discover what’s inside!

The flaps on this book are very sturdy which is extremely important for young readers who are just developing dexterity skills. It’s a little more difficult the first time you open a flap, so I suggest that you pre-open them before you read it for the first time, or if giving this book (to one particular child) that you be around to help them open the flap for the first time.

Not only is this book excellent because it’s “lift-the-flap”, but also because it’s subject is ABCs. Books about ABCs are excellent choices in Pre-K, especially at the beginning of the year. Students love the ABCs because it’s something they can wrap their head around and even more importantly, excel at. A sense of mastery is golden at this beginning stage of reading.

There is a page for each letter and on that page are examples of words that begin with that letter (one on top and one under the flap). As an added bonus, each page also has ‘instructions’ for how to write the letter (grooves inset into the book) that students can follow along with their finger to correctly write the letter. So this book is great for early learning but also has something a little more challenging for advanced students to enjoy as well.

Every student that I read with in my Pre-K class enjoyed this book. That is why I decided to give this book as my end-of-year gift to the students. Cannot recommend it more highly for any beginning reader.
