Buffalo Fluffalo
Author: Bess Kalb
Illustrator: Erin Kraan
Published: 2024
This book, relatively new to the market, was a New York Times Bestseller in 2024 and for good reason. I was drawn in from the very first page depicting a lovely panoramic mountain view complete with mountains, sky, sun, water, trees and flowers. The book had me on that first page with “There once was a Buffalo Fluffalo…”.
Turns out the Buffalo was in a very bad mood (how could that be in such a beautiful place?) and in need of some help from friends who try to make him feel more comfortable. But Buffalo Fluffalo has a prideful exterior that makes it a challenge for him to accept the offers of friendship. The theme about vulnerability and friendship is handled gently and skillfully. At the end of this book I always feel warm and fuzzy inside and what’s not to love about that? :-)
This book has excellent rhymes and cadence for all ages to enjoy. It is recommended for ages 2 to 5 years old but I suspect children as old as 7 would like this book. It’s perfect for the end of the pre-school year or kindergarten.
