Can I Be Your Dog?
Author and Illustrator: Troy Cummings
Published: 2018
This is a really fun book and will appeal to all, especially dog lovers. The story is narrated by the main character “Arfy” who is looking for a new home and family to adopt him. Arfy writes letters to the various residents in the town with his pitch on why they should adopt him as their dog. The letters are adorable and funny. The various residents reply with their own letters, most of which saying that they cannot adopt him for one reason or another. Arfy can’t help but to feel a bit down by the rejections but continues on with determination. There’s a unexpected twist at the end and, of course, Arfy finds the home that is just right for him.
I’m a huge fan of this book and Troy Cummings. I love the intention of the story and the way it is told. The illustrations are brilliantly spot on - they tell as much about the story as the words themselves. Well done Mr. Cummings!
This is a great book for ages 4 to 7 years old. However, fair warning - your child is likely to want to adopt a dog after reading this story! In fact, the author who is clearly a dog lover himself gives suggestions at the end of the book about how you can help homeless animals in your neighborhood even if you cannot adopt one yourself.
