Two qualities make this book great for children just starting to read and learn basic academic skills. First, it’s a book about counting and young kids love counting books because it’s a skill they can master and feel good about. The other quality that makes it a great choice is that it’s a singing book. Young kids love singing books! The song also makes the words easier to remember, and kids love it when they can ‘read’ a book by themselves (even if it’s from memory).

This book is super popular with the Pre-K kids that I read with, especially at the beginning of the year. I had one student (Carly) who wanted to read it every week and she would be disappointed if I didn’t have the book with me. Sometimes, a book is so popular that I must leave it at home so kids will be more willing to read something else or something new. This was one of those books.

A tip when reading… get kids more involved by having them sing the “Yum Yum” or “Glub Glub” parts of the story. Point to the words as they are singing them. They will begin to recognize the words.

I love the artwork in this book. Its very colorful and there’s a lot to see on each page. Since you’re singing the words (as opposed to reading them) the book moves along at a lively pace. This can make it a challenge to slow down and appreciate the artwork. For this reason, I think this would be a fantastic book for a child to have in their own personal library - so they have the option of slowing down and taking in all the pictures.

Recommended for ages 2 to 4 but since it’s a singing book, I believe even younger children can enjoy it.
