Harold and the Purple Crayon

$0.00

By Crockett Johnson

I’ve never felt so childhood deprived as I do about Harold and the Purple Crayon. How could I have not known about this book?!

For those of you who are familiar with this book it won’t surprise you to learn that I discovered that everyone who has read it, loves it too. This is a real favorite, for people of all ages. It was written in 1955 so children have been enjoying this book for many generations now.

This book was given to me by my good friend Judi. She wanted to contribute towards the library and this was her favorite book growing up. She credits it for the childlike wanderlust that she still enjoys today (she’s in Greece as I write this!).

It seems like children/people love this book for their own different reasons, which makes sense because the book is all about following your likes and dreams. The book is very simple so it can appeal to the very young. Kids that don’t know how to read yet can easily follow the story along, although the narrative is also wonderful and adds depth and wit to the story.

It all begins with a big fat purple crayon that young Harold gets to splay about wherever he likes. What a wonderful premise to start with, there’s so much freedom from the get-go. Harold lets his imagination and his purple crayon take him on a journey. However Harold wants, he can find a clever way through an obstacle, or he can change course and try something completely new.

I think the reason why this book is so popular is because it is so relatable. We all want a purple crayon that we can color with any way we wish. We all want to create whatever we want to create, and to go wherever we want to go. Harold gets to do that… and it’s so easy and so fun! Harold has a great time on his journey, and we enjoy watching him do it.

Grab your Purple Crayons everyone, it’s time to Imagine a New Adventure!

Recommended for ages 2 to 5 years old.
