How Diablo Became Spirit

$0.00

Author: Andrew Newman
Author: Anna Breytenbach
Illustrator: Alexis Aronson
Published: 2017

This is the first non-fiction book that I added to my collection. I became interested in this story when I saw a Facebook video about the “real-life” Diablo (now named “Spirit”) and Anna, the woman who helped him. To see this video go to YouTube and search for “The incredible story of how leopard Diablo became Spirit”. I highly recommend this video, however I would suggest reading the book first and then watching the video afterwards.

This is a great story with a great message. The book itself is very well put together. The story could be a little tricky to tell, but the authors did a wonderful job with the writing. And the illustrations are also masterfully done and help to translate the feeling and meaningfulness of the story.

I read this book for the first time recently with a student and it was a huge success. I brought this book to school for Issabella because she loves to read something new and interesting each week. She loved the book! Issabella did not get hung up on the fact that a human communicated with an animal via her heart, she simply accepted this fact. But I worry that, in this day and age when some parents are wanting to ban books for various reasons, that a parent might have trouble with this book. Use your best judgement about what settings this book would be appropriate for.

This book is one of several books in the Conscious Stories series of books written by Andrew Newman and his team. Each book has suggestions for how to get the most out of their books and where to get more information. I have not read any of the other Conscious Stories books yet but I’m sure I will because I was very impressed by this one!

Recommended for ages 5 through 12.
