How Rocket Learned to Read

$0.00

Author and Illustrator: Tad Hills
Published: 2010

This wonderful book was created by the same artist who wrote Duck and Goose. It features Rocket who must be the cutest dog in literature rivalled only by Snoopy in my opinion.

Rocket meets a little yellow bird whose purpose in life is to teach creatures how to read. This bird loves the alphabet and stories and you just can’t help yourself from being swept up in her enthusiasm. Rocket is reluctant about reading at first but soon comes to share the bird’s passion.

One of the things that I really liked about this story is the way it associates learning to read with the passing of seasons. Learning to read doesn’t happen all at once, it is a process. First you learn the letters and the sounds. And then (next season perhaps) you start to put the words together, etc.

I also liked that, while Rocket is learning to read, he relates what he learns to the ‘real’ world. Rocket learns how to spell words that are important to him like “Dig”, “Sun”, “Wag” and his friends’ names. But his favorite part of learning to read was listening to the stories that the bird would read to him.

This book is recommended for ages 3 to 6 years old. I think it would be most effective to read with a child who has some mastery over the alphabet and is starting the process of putting the letters together and learning to spell. I haven’t found the perfect opportunity to read this book with a child yet, but I knew I had to have it in my library for that moment when it comes.

If your child comes to love Rocket (which is very likely!), there are several other Rocket books that they may love as well and can help them practice on their own reading journey.
