Mouse Shapes
Author: Ellen Stoll Walsh
Published: 2007
This is my favorite children’s book about shapes
The story is fun and playful. As with Ellen Stoll Walsh’s other books, the artwork is bold, the shapes bright and chunky.
Shapes is a topic that every 3 or 4 year old can relate to and feel some mastery over, which makes it a perfect pick for the beginning of the Pre-K year. And this is a book that works well with small groups of kids (3 or 4).
This book is also the perfect backdrop to do a hands-on activity. I went to my local arts store and picked up felt white mats (8 ½ by 11 inches) and bought a bag of felt shapes (see images). I also got felt letters and numbers for other activities. The kids loved imitating the shapes that the mice were making in the book, and then made their own creations. This was my class’s favorite activity this year. The kids asked to do it every week, so I had to stop bringing it as an option while I introduced the kids to some other books and activities.
Recommended Age 2 years and up.
Also, check out Ellen Stoll Walsh’s companion book Mouse Paint for another great book with kid activity!
