I am a huge fan of this book. It’s has all the best qualities of a great children’s book: great story, beautiful artwork, relatable characters, comforting rhythm, and a loving message. This was an easy choice to add to my favorite top ten children’s books.
What impressed me even more about this book is the impact that it had on one particular child. I’ve written before about how it only takes one book to change a child’s life forever. For one little girl, this was the book.
Here is what happened… I had only been volunteering for a couple months so I was still getting my feet wet so to speak. For the first time, a child asked if she could read with me. (Previously the teacher would select which child would read.) I had read with Amy once before, a few weeks earlier. After we got settled, she picked out “My Friends”. We had read this book last time and she wanted to read it again. I usually swap out my books each week, so I was glad that I had the book with me. Then the girl asked if we could “Imagination Read” which means we just look at the pictures and imagine what is happening in the story. So, we start ‘reading’ and it turns out that Amy remembered the entire book, almost word for word! That’s how much of an effect this book had on her, she just loved it! It was pure joy reading that book with her that day.
I remember feeling pleasantly surprised by how much she loved and remembered the book. But I also felt something else… a jolt of awe mixed with excitement. After thinking about this I realized that the jolt I’d felt was about making a difference. I had made a difference in someone’s life. I had helped to inspire Amy . She now knows what it feels like to love a book, to know the feeling of how a book can comfort or inspire you in some way. After all, that is what Little Libraries is all about… comforting and inspiring children thru books. As I say, the miracle happens one child, one book at a time.
