What Is Chasing Duck
Author and Illustrator: Jan Thomas
Published: 2017
This is another book in Jan Thomas’ Giggle Gang series which I love. I love the characters in this series and the expressions on their faces are just priceless. As all Jan Thomas’ books, the illustrations are colorful and vibrant.
This book is funny, and we all know how I feel about the Magic of Funny. But this book requires a little bit more imagination and higher-order thinking to appreciate the humor which can be a great way to spark a young person’s cognition. For example, when the squirrel (spoiler alert!) returns the turnip to Duck and Duck says “Quack Quack”, you can ask the student “what do you think Duck means when he says that to the squirrel?”.
This is an excellent book to start a discussion about imagination, as the animals each imagine what horrible scary thing is chasing duck. It’s also about how our imagination can sometimes lead us to imagine things are much worse than they actually are.
If you are reading Jan Thomas Giggle Gang books for the first time, this is not the one I would start with. I personally start with The Doghouse. But its an excellent book to dive deeper into the characters and encourage deeper thinking.
Recommended for ages 4 to 7 years old.
