“Why Not You?” is written by Ciara and Russell Wilson. Ciara is a Grammy-winning singer-songwriter, dancer, model and actress. Russell Wilson has a stellar career as an NFL quarterback. As children they were both encouraged to dream big and told that they could achieve anything with dedication and hard work. Together they now lead the Why Not You Foundation dedicated to motivating, empowering, and preparing today’s youth to be tomorrow’s leaders.
The “Why Not You?” book depicts two children of color on the cover and children of all colors, sizes and abilities inside. When I was reading with Anaya, the only African American girl in her class, I showed her all the books in my bag and let her pick the one she wanted to read. She immediately picked out Why Not You?. It must have been refreshing to see children on the cover that she could immediately identify with.
The book itself is really excellent. In addition to having a topic that is inspiring to all, the book itself has a beautiful cadence and rhythm to it. I liked the book when I read it through myself, but the real test of a book is how it reads aloud with children. When I read it with Anaya, she was uncharacteristically quiet and listened intently all the way through. At the end of the book she just looked at me and smiled. No words were necessary.
This book is enjoyable, encouraging, heartfelt and cheerful. I recommend it for children of any shape, size or color, ages 3 to 7.
