This book was a big hit at school today. The kids loved it!
There’s not a lot of words in this book, and the words are repeated - so it’s a great opportunity to teach/learn a couple new words and not be overwhelmed. Mostly, the pictures tell the story in this book. And the artwork is stunningly beautiful and compelling. Looking at the pictures you can feel the cold wind and the wet snow, and sense the fear, exhaustion and determination of the characters. The story itself is very heart warming. It’s a story about setting aside fears and helping others, even if they are different from you and communication is difficult. There is something universal about helping each other to survive so the story is as old as life itself. But it’s told in such a beautiful way - without words that wouldn’t be understood by the others anyway. The ending of the book is very warm and fuzzy and will be sure to bring a smile to every reader’s face.
I found this book at my local library, but I have fallen in love with it. And, the kids love it too – so it’s going in my collection. Be sure to check out Matthew Cordell’s other work as well.
The age range on the book is officially 2 to 5. But I think it requires a certain amount of self -awareness, so I would recommend reading to at least 3 yr olds. But, I also think older kids can enjoy this book too. This is a great book for a child (of any age) who may not be reading a lot of words yet, but can understand nuance, and appreciates a great story.
